Free Webinar: Capitalizing on CMS’s Bundled Payment for Care Improvement Initiative • 10.06.11

Presented by: Dr. Michael Pine

When: Thursday, October 20th, 2011 at 2:00 PM CDT

Most hospital executives are now familiar with CMS’s Bundled Payment for Care Improvement Initiative and the RFA announced at the end of August. In return for guaranteeing a discount to CMS, awardees will be permitted to enter into gainsharing relationships with their physicians and will receive any savings generated beyond the guaranteed discount. The RFA offers potential awardees four different payment models.

This initiative may offer hospitals an excellent opportunity to align with physicians, to improve the quality and efficiency of care, and to increase margins significantly. However, realizing the potential of CMS’s offering requires an understanding of a few key principles and the ability to effectively manage the risks associated with the program.

Dr. Michael Pine, our firm’s founder and a leader in the fields of episode-based reimbursement strategies and clinical quality assessment and improvement, will be providing this free, educational webinar. It is targeted at senior hospital administrators, to help them understand and benefit from CMS’s Bundled Payment initiative. The webinar is being held in response to requests from several hospitals that contacted us after speaking with industry leaders who heard Dr. Pine present on Bundled Payments and the CMS Initiative.

Attendees will learn:

  • Who should and who should not participate and why
  • Three common, potentially costly, misconceptions about the CMS initiative
  • Risks of participation and how to manage them effectively
  • How to select and structure episodes
  • How Model 2 can offer greater rewards with less risk than either Model 1 or Model 4
  • How FFS, shared savings, and warranties can be combined into a powerful gainsharing arrangement that protects and promotes clinical quality while rewarding economic stewardship
  • How current analytic techniques can be used to promote improvements in quality and cost-efficiency and ensure fair distribution of savings

The 60-minute presentation is based on MPA’s extensive work and peer-reviewed publications on episode-based reimbursement, bundled payments, and payment reform and will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A in which Dr. Pine will respond to questions from participants. While MPA is available and would welcome the opportunity to work with you to respond to this RFA, the webinar is educational in nature and focuses on general concepts and ideas rather than specific products. We believe CMS’s initiative represents a positive direction for healthcare payment and would like to contribute to its success.
