PRESS RELEASE: MPA Founder, Dr. Michael Pine, Receives Elliot Stone Award for Outstanding Contributions in Health Data Analysis and Innovation • 10.30.08
CHICAGO, Ill. –- October 30, 2008 (NEWSWIRE) –- On October 27, 2008, the National Association of Health Data Organizations (NAHDO) awarded Michael Pine, MD, MBA the prestigious Elliot M. Stone Award of Excellence in Health Data Leadership, honoring a career of service dedicated to advancing the science of measurement and applied health services research using health care data.
For more than twenty years, Dr. Pine has assisted clinicians, healthcare organizations, payers, and consumers to analyze and evaluate data on clinical quality and healthcare delivery and to apply findings to their clinical, managerial, and purchasing decisions. He is a nationally recognized expert in designing and applying innovative techniques to improve the quality and cost effectiveness of care. His contributions have included an objective measure of hospital adverse outcomes rates, refinement of measures to distinguish between clinical effectiveness and operational efficiency, development of methods to link clinical processes and outcomes of care, and creation of systems to support prospective, risk-adjusted reimbursement for episodes of care. He recently completed a study on Addition of Clinical Data Elements to Administrative Data for Hospital-level Reporting for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Dr. Pine is the author of numerous publications in basic science, clinical medicine, medical decision making, and healthcare performance monitoring and improvement. He was an early champion of present-on-admission coding and has been a major influence in national and state policies to enhance existing healthcare databases with easily obtained clinical data to improve measurement of outcomes. His work has been dedicated to improving quality of care for patients, and to transforming the U.S. healthcare system.
“States are able to produce better information for consumers, employers, and the health care industry because of Michael Pine’s landmark research on quality measurement,” says Denise Love, Executive Director of NAHDO.
For seventeen years, NAHDO has presented the NAHDO Award of Excellence in Health Leadership to an individual who represents the highest ideals in data collection, analysis, or outcomes measurement and whose creative efforts have made outstanding contributions to improvements in the collection, application, and/or dissemination of health data. Until his passing in 2006, Elliot Stone helped NAHDO select awardees who made significant contributions to the health information field and who exhibited characteristics of quality, excellence, and passion in their work—-characteristics that Elliot himself embodied. Past recipients include, among others, Dr. John E Wennberg, Robert Fetter, PhD, John D. Thompson MS, and Senators Kassebaum and Kennedy.
Dr. Pine is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and of the American College of Cardiology. He has served on the medical faculties of Harvard, the University of California at Irvine, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Chicago. Dr. Pine is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and the University of Cincinnati School of Business.
